Wallace Sherman Aadland was born on May 22, 1936, to Walter and Bertha (Rye) Aadland on his mother’s family farm in Independence Township, Day County. He was baptized and confirmed at Skudesnes Lutheran Church (where his grandfather, Knud Rye was a charter member). He attended country school, Independence # 204, before graduating from Pierpont High School in 1955. After graduation, he enlisted into the United States Army completing basic training in Arkansas and was stationed in Hawaii for 18 months.

On June 15, 1963, Wally was united in marriage to Jenean Steensland at Williston, North Dakota. Wally was an active third generation farmer and continued farming until 2000, when he and Jenean moved to Webster. Even after “retiring”, Wally still made many trips to the farm to “supervise” as his son, Todd, and grandsons continued to the fourth and fifth generation of the Aadland farming operation. There was no place Wally was more content to be than on the farm.

In addition to farming, Wally served on the Skudesnes Cemetery Board where he and Jenean founded the perpetual care program. He also served on the Independence Township Board where he served and treasurer for many years. Wally cherished time with his family. He will be forever loved and greatly missed by many.

He is survived by his children, Troy (Shannon) Aadland of Trent, SD, Todd (Nancy) Aadland of Pierpont, SD, and Tara (Hal) Smith of Hampton, MN, grandchildren, Taylor (Cullen) Salter, Tayson Aadland, Nikolas Aadland, Alexandra Smith, and Ivy Smith, great-grandchildren, Taylen, Caden, and Tyler Salter. He also is survived by his sister Beverly Hemmah of Sturgis, SD, and brother Roger (Diane) Aadland of Watertown, SD, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jenean, sister Lucy Geffre, and brother-in-law Jim Hemmah.
