Virginia Woken, 82 of Roslyn and formerly of Aberdeen died on Monday, February 15, 2016 at Sioux Falls.
Her funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 22, 2016 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen, Pastors Kevin Bergeson and Janet Johnson will officiate. Burial will be at Fron Lutheran Cemetery, Roslyn.
Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday 5-7 P.M. and prior to services on Monday at the church.
Virginia Mae Hunt was born on Saturday, November 11, 1933 to Delbert and Tressa (Amonson) Hunt in Huron, South Dakota. She was baptized in Eagle Grove, Iowa and later confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. As a young child the family moved to Aberdeen where she began school. She graduated from Central High School in 1951. While in high school she was active in band, played the clarinet, and was selected for All State Band. After graduation she worked at her parents radio station (KABR) and family restaurant (Del’s Drive Inn). She then attended the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis and graduated in 1954. She returned to Aberdeen where she began working for Indian Health Service in the Division of Personnel Management.
She was united in marriage to Elden Woken on October 17, 1959 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. To this union two children were born, Craig Timothy in 1960 and Marnah Lee in 1963. The family made their home in Aberdeen. Virginia continued to work at Indian Health Service and retired in 1995. After retirement, the couple traveled and visited their daughter in Europe and helped their son with his business. In 2007 the couple moved to Roslyn. Elden passed away in June 2010. Prior to his death they had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Virginia was a life-long member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. She was a 50 year member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, a 62 year member of the Order of Easter Star, a Past Queen with Daughters of the Nile, Aurora Temple #39 where she was installed as Queen in 1971. She was also a member of Ashrama Temple #7 in Sioux Falls.. She also was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She loved traveling, animals, music and reading. Virginia was loved by all who knew her.
Virginia passed away on Monday, February 15, 2016 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 4 days.
Survivors include her children, Craig Woken of Roslyn, SD and Marnah Woken of Sioux Falls, SD; a brother, Duane Hunt and a sister, Linda Hunt both of Aberdeen. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.
