Virginia Engstrom

Virginia Engstrom, 85 of Webster died on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Bethesda Home in Webster. Her funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Egeland Lutheran Church near Waubay, Robert Grebel will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday 5-7 P.M. and prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Virginia Mae Johnson was born on Monday, March 15, 1926 to Andrew and Amanda (Aslesen) Johnson near Wallace, South Dakota. She was the first child baptized at Egeland Lutheran Church and was confirmed in 1940 at Goodhue Lutheran Church near Florence. She attended country school in Wheatland Township and graduated from Waubay High School. After high school she attended a beauty school. She was united in marriage to Gordon Engstrom on October 15, 1949 at Egeland Lutheran Church south of Waubay. After their marriage the couple farmed south of Webster in Highland Township for two years and then in 1952 moved to a farm in Egeland Township where they farmed. In 1987 the couple moved off the farm to a rural home west of Waubay. In 1977 she went to work for Dakotah, Inc. in Webster and worked there until her retirement in 1993. Gordon passed away in 1995. She moved to Webster in 2003 and entered Bethesda Home in Webster in November 2009. She was a member of Egeland Lutheran Church and was active in Ladies Aide, Circle, quilting and taught Sunday School. She was a 4-H Leader when her children were young. She enjoyed quilting and puzzles. She enjoyed making Norwegian specialties, lefse and lutefisk, for family and friends. Virginia passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Webster, South Dakota at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 30 days. She is survived by one son, Jerry (Karna) Engstrom of Waubay, SD; three daughters, Judy Zubke of Waubay, SD, Jewel (Roland) Larson of Webster, SD and Joan Engstrom of Aberdeen, SD: one sister, Joan (Gene) Warriner of Blunt, SD; a sister-in-law, Doreen Johnson of Watertown, SD; seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, John, three sisters and one brother.
