Virgil Holman

WEBSTER- Virgil Holman, 87 of Webster died on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at Bethesda Home in Webster. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waubay, Rev. Jeffrey Kalb will officiate, burial will be at Lakewood Cemetery. Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Monday 5-7 P.M. and prior to services on Tuesday at the church. Virgil Charles Holman was born on Saturday, December 9, 1922 to Carl O. and Sophia (Leimkuhl) Holman at Waubay, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. He attended grade school in Waubay and graduated from Waubay High School in 1942. He was the first student from Waubay to attend the South Dakota American Legion sponsored Boy’s State at Northern State College in Aberdeen in 1942. After graduation he worked at Igloo, South Dakota building Army Ammunition Depots. In January 1943 he entered the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 342nd Infantry, 86th Division. He saw action in central Europe, earning the Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. Then he went to the Philippines and was honorably discharged in February 1946. He returned to Waubay and began working to the South Dakota Department of Transportation. On April 30, 1948 he was united in marriage to Ruby Brigham at Waubay. After their marriage the couple made their home in Waubay. In 1977 the couple moved to Webster. He retired in 1984 after thirty eight years of service with the Department of Transportation. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waubay. He was a member of Herbert McKennett Post 40 American Legion and V.F.W. Post 4690 in Webster for over 50 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and playing cards. Virgil passed away on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at Webster, South Dakota at the age of 87 years, 4 months and 1 day. Survivors include his wife Ruby of Webster; one niece, two nephews and several special cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.
