Violet Solsaa

November 18, 1929 — March 22, 2021

***NOTE service time is in May. Violet Gladys (Heemeyer) Solsaa completed her earthly journey on March 22, 2021 in Menomonie, WI at the age of 91. She was born on November 18, 1929 to Minnie (Lantinga) and Albert Heemeyer. Violet grew up on a farm east of Castlewood SD and helped with her share of chores. She attended country school through the 8th grade at Hamlin County #4. Violet went on to beauty school and then pursued her hair stylist career in Webster at Lorraine’s House of Beauty. It was in Webster where she met and married the love of her life, Maynard. Together they raised two children and helped raise many more when she stopped working at the beauty shop and started an in-home daycare. For almost 45 years Violet helped raise those children as her own. She always had a supply of goodies for the kids and any visitor with a favorite being her peanut butter logs that no one can make quite like she did. Much as Violet loved her kids, families knew Friday was her day off each week to pursue her other passion, fixing hair for the residents at Bethesda Nursing Home in Webster. Her care-giving nature could be seen throughout her life, even in the throws of Alzheimer’s at the care facilities where she was one of the ones who needed care. After “retirement,” volunteering became Violet’s passion. She loved working at Needs Anonymous in Webster enjoying the “year long garage sale,” and sewed hundreds of quilt tops for Lutheran World Relief. Violet was very active at St. John’s Lutheran Church and had volunteer roles there as well from Sunday School to WELCA. Very grateful for sharing life with her include her family, Arvin (Barbara) Solsaa of Menomonie, WI, Gloria Solsaa of Red Wing, MN, 4 granddaughters - Natasha, Nastia, and Annie Solsaa, and Ellie Bechel, sister-in-law, Vange Solsaa, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her husband, Maynard, her parents, her siblings and their spouses, Maynard’s parents and his siblings and brother-in-law. Her family is so very grateful for the wonderful staff who cared about Violet as much as they cared for her at Sun Dial Manor in Bristol, SD and more recently, at Our House Senior Living in Menomonie, WI. We will be celebrating Violet’s life on Saturday, May 22nd at 10:00 AM for family and invited guests at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Webster, SD with Rev. Michael DeKraai officiating. Public walk-through visitation will be from 5-7pm at Fiksdal Funeral Home on May 21st. Masks are required and respect social distancing. If you are looking for an idea of how to honor Violet, we are starting a memorial fund at Sun Dial Manor in Bristol for an enclosed outdoor garden space to give those with memory issues a safe way to enjoy the outdoors.
