Vernon Skoba

WEBSTER- Vernon Skoba 86, of Webster died on Sunday, January 01, 2006 at Beverly Healthcare in Groton. His funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 6, 2006 at American Lutheran Church in Webster, Rev. William Olsen officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Webster Cemetery. Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Thursday 4-8 P.M. and prior to services on Friday. Vernon Leroy Skoba was born on Monday, August 18, 1919 to John and Clara (Dahl) Skoba on a farm east of Webster, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church. As a young child the family moved into Webster where he attended school and graduated from Webster High School. In 1942 he entered the Army Air Force and served during World War II. After the war he returned to Webster and worked at the Day County courthouse as deputy Clerk of Courts. On May 27, 1955 he married Winifred Peterson at Webster, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple made their home in Webster. In 1960 he began working at Day County Hospital in the maintenance department and worked there until his retirement in the late 1980’s. Mrs. Skoba passed away in October 1998. After her death he continued to live in their home until entering Bethesda Home in Webster in January 2004. Vernon was a life member of Herbert McKennett Post 40 American Legion in Webster where he had served as Commander, he was a life member of Webster V.F.W. Post 4690, a life member of the National Rifle Association and was a member of the Webster Kiwanis Club. He loved deer hunting, trap shooting, collecting guns, collecting coins, traveling and taking care of his cats. Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Hazel Peterson of Watertown, SD and Dorothy Peterson of Fargo, ND; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one brother, John.
