Vernon Barber

February 3, 1923 — October 19, 2005

WEBSTER- Vernon “Jud” Barber, 82 of Webster died on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at Bethesda Home in Webster. His funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, October 22, 2005 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Webster, Rev. William Olsen officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery, Waubay. Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Friday 4-8 P.M. with a 7:00 P.M. prayer service and prior to services on Saturday. Vernon Stanley “Jud” Barber was born on Saturday, February 3, 1923 at Waubay, South Dakota. He was baptized in the Waubay Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. He attended elementary school in Waubay and graduated from Waubay High School in 1942. In March 1943 he entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II building the Burma Road. After he was honorably discharged in January 1946 he returned to Waubay. On November 10, 1946 he married Judy Holland at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Waubay. After their marriage the couple made their home in Waubay. In 1965 the couple moved to Webster where he worked at Bennett Lumber Company until it was destroyed by fire. He worked at the Department of Game, Fish and Parks until his retirement. After retirement he pursued his woodworking hobby and built many award winning pieces. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trap shooting. He also wrote a book “Just Passing Through” which he published. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Webster and American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his wife, Judy of Webster; two sons, Jim (Bonnie) Barber of St. Paul, MN and Wesley Rassmuson of Madison, SD; four daughters, Charlotte (Charles) Glynn of Fullerton, ND, Loma (James) Erickson of Mesa, AZ, Jeanne (Ronald) Schetnan of Fergus Falls, MN and Mary Jo (Don) Hough of Sioux Falls, SD; one sister, Shirley (Victor) Bundrock of Orangevale, CA; 20 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Alice Fonda Barber and one brother, Dean W. Barber.
