Thomas Mikkelson, 62 of Waubay died on Monday, February 14, 2011 at his home in Waubay. His funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 18, 2011 at Fiksdal Funeral Chapel in Webster, Rev. Janet Miller officiating. Military Interment will be in the Spring at Lakewood Cemetery, Waubay. Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service on Thursday 5-7 P.M. and one hour prior to services on Friday. Fiksdalfuneral.com. Thomas Kent Mikkelson was born on Thursday, January 13, 1949 to DeVerne and Virginia (Iverson) Mikkelson at Portland, Oregon. When he was five years old the family moved backto Waubay, South Dakota. He attended Waubay Public School and graduated from high school in 1967. While in high school he was very active in sports. He then attended Waldorf College in Iowa. In 1968 he entered the U.S. Air Force and served in Vietnam in 1968-1969. He married Denise Grabast on May 28, 1988 at McCook, Nebraska. During his time in the service he was stationed in Minot and Grand Forks, North Dakota, Guam and Austin, Texas where he was Crewchief on the F4 Phantom, B-52 Bomber and the B-1 Bomber. He retired from active duty in October 1994 and the couple moved, in 1997, to Waubay. He worked at the Waubay School, City of Waubay Upper Plains Construction, Prompt Expressand was owner operator for Long Haul Trucking. He was a member of Brady-Monson Post 129, American Legion of Waubay. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and visiting with his many friends. Tom passed away on Monday, February 14, 2011 at his home in Waubay, South Dakota at the age of 62 years, 1 month and 1 day. Survivors include his wife, Denise of Waubay; two sons, C.J. Mikkelson and Justin Mikkelson both of Waubay, SD; two brothers, Jim Mikkelson of Waubay, SD and David (Joyce) Mikkelson of Westminster, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents.
