If you would like to make a donation in Terry’s honor in lieu of sending flowers, the family asks that you consider mailing a donation to the Waubay Fire Department at PO Box 135, Waubay, SD 57273. Terry served as a volunteer fire fighter for the Waubay Fire Department for approximately 30 years and they in turn helped Terry during his times of need.
Terrance “Terry” James Town was born on March 4, 1952, in Webster, SD to Doris and Truman Town. Terry was a bouncing baby boy that won the “Most Beautiful Baby Contest.” Terry grew up with his 3 siblings and attended school in Waubay, SD graduating in 1970. During his high school years, he gained many friends and enjoyed playing football. There he also met his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Sheryl (Althoff) Town and the two were married on November 13, 1971. Terry proudly served as a US Marine for 4 years. After receiving honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, they returned to Waubay, SD where they raised their four beautiful daughters – Melissa, Sarah, Peggy, and Haley.
Terry worked multiple jobs throughout his life. Many remember him best for keeping order at the American Legion, cooking delicious food at Town’s Lakeside Motel, and eventually retiring as a rural mail carrier for the US Post Office. He volunteered in various areas of his community including serving as a Eucharistic Minister, Church Councilman, and a Knights of Columbus member for the Immaculate Conception Church; a volunteer firefighter; a Waubay City Councilman; and a Commander of the American Legion. As if all of this didn’t keep him busy enough, Terry made plenty of time to enjoy his favorite hobbies – fishing, hunting, trapping, and gardening. He had a gift for storytelling and filled the room with his booming voice and jovial personality.
Terry’s love for his family and his pets was immeasurable. Terry will forever be loved and missed by his wife of 53 years Sheryl; his daughters Melissa (Brett) Jorgenson, Peggy (Andrew) Harter, and Haley (Tyler) Giang; his grandchildren Brittany (Tyler) Geffre, Alexis (Cody) Thompson, Janna Jorgenson, Gracie and Lance Harter, Madison, Easton, and Marley Giang; his great grandsons Jax, Axel, Wrex, and Brox Geffre; his mother Doris Town; his brother Jerry (Lynda) Town; his only son and puppy Putz Town; and so many in laws, nieces and nephews, and extended family and friends.
Terry passed away on Monday, October 21, 2024 at Strand-Kjorsvig Living Center in Roslyn, SD. He was reunited in Heaven with his daughter Sarah Town, father Truman Town, sisters Tamera Town and Janel Nelson, mother-in-law Serine Althoff, sister-in-law Joanne Town, brother-in-law David Buck, his grandparents, and other loved ones.
Sheryl and the family would like to extend a very heartfelt “Thank You” to all that have helped Terry over the past few years during his times of need. Your kindness is greatly appreciated.
