WAUBAY- Serine Adeline (Holland) Althoff, 88 years young, passed away at her home on Sunday, September 30, 2018. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her family, Pastor Allie, and her home health nurse, Kathy. All received communion and shared prayers of comfort.
Her funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Waubay, Rev. Allie Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the service at the American Legion and will be hosted by the Our Savior’s Women of the ELCA. The family is grateful for the outpouring of love and support from extended family and friends who have made this difficult time a little easier to bear…thank you.

Serine was born on December 6, 1929, to Jacob and Isabelle Holland. She had eleven sisters and brothers. She married Earl Simon Althoff on April 11, 1948. They were blessed to have nine children: Earlene (Harlan) Wickre, Dennis (Nancy) Althoff, Sheryl (Terry) Town, Dwight (Becky) Althoff, Rita (David) Buck, Ryan (Traci) Althoff, Gary (Tetiana) Althoff, Gordon Althoff, and Lisa (Robert) Ryan. The family grew over the years to include 133 members including 27 grandchildren, 36 spouses, 55 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren. Serine counted her family as her biggest blessing and was often caught bragging about them.
Serine was baptized, confirmed, and married at Tabor Lutheran Church north of Webster. She was known for her love of children even as a young girl and was a favored caregiver to several children. She was also known for her wonderful home cooking and lured Earl as a bidder for her basket at a Basket Social in 1947. She was a person of faith from childhood and received an award for memorizing the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount during confirmation. Serine was a homemaker and farmer; she also enjoyed hobbies of quilting, embroidery, crafting, and playing games like dominos, banana grams and especially her Kindle.
Preceded in death and meeting Serine at the gates of heaven are her parents, Jacob and Isabelle Holland; brothers Edwin, Sherman and James Holland; sisters Josephine Holland, Lorraine Peterson, Irene Tvinnereim, Judith Barber and Harriet Evenson; a granddaughter Sarah Town; and a great granddaughter Lillian Stroup. She is survived by her husband Earl, her 9 children, 26 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, and 3 sisters, Emma Waddle, Selma Evenson, and Helen Nelson.
