Roger Monson

WEBSTER – Roger Monson 74 of Webster passed away Friday July 20, 2018 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. Services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday July 24, 2018 at United Methodist Church in Webster, Rev. Ken Ballard will officiate. Military interment will be in the Webster Cemetery. Roger Monson, son of Kenneth and Emma (Svarstad) Monson, was born August 17, 1943, in Webster, SD. He was baptized and confirmed at Lily Lutheran Church and grew up on a farm in the Lily area. He graduated from Webster High School with the class of 1961. In December of 1964, Roger entered the United States Army and was stationed in Korea until he was honorably discharged. He was united in marriage to Janice Burns on May 7, 1966, at United Methodist Church in Webster. The couple made their home in Webster where Roger was employed by Nash 66 service station and the South Dakota Department of Transportation for 41 years retiring in 2008. Roger was a kind soul who was loved by all who knew him. He was best known for his sense of humor and a mischievous smirk on his face. He enjoyed competing in carp fishing tournaments, completing woodworking projects, and serving others through his volunteer work. He was a regular at coffee gatherings with his friends at The Diner on Main and the A & W. He treasured spending time with family and friends but the time he spent with his grandsons, Preston and Collin, brought the greatest joy to his life. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and served on the church council. At the time of his passing he was a member of Webster City Council, Highland Cemetery Association, Commander of VFW Post 4690, served as an honor guard member, and was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. He will be forever in the hearts of his wife, Janice of Webster, SD; two daughters: Becky (Dana) Guffin of Aberdeen, SD, Tami (Rick) Sundvold of Clark, SD, one son: Travis Monson & (Alisha LaCourse) of Webster, SD; two grandchildren Preston Sundvold and Collin Dean. Brothers: LeRoy (Peggy) Monson of Lily, SD; Leslie Monson of Corbin, KY; Stanley (Nyla) Monson of Groton, SD; one sister: Darlene (Joe) Hanson of Webster, SD and many nieces and nephews.
