R. V. "Ike" Grimes

R. V. “Ike” Grimes 92 of Aberdeen and formerly of Bristol died on Thursday, January 07, 2016 at Manor Care Health in Aberdeen. Memorial services will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bristol, Rev. Chris Strom officiating. Inurnment will be at Bristol Cemetery. Memorial visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday 5-7 P.M. fiksdalfuneral.com. R. V. “Ike” Grimes was born on Wednesday, October 10, 1923 to Lynn and Edna (Sterling) Grimes on a farm near Crandall, South Dakota. When he was a young child the family moved to Aberdeen where he started school. When he was a Junior in high school the family moved to Lily where he graduated from high school. After he received his education he continued to live on the family farm and farmed with his parents. On April 13, 1952 he was united in marriage to Coleen Schimmel at Webster, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple made their home and farmed in the Crandall hills. In 1969 they moved to Bristol where he worked at the Farmer’s Union gas station and later at Wheat Grower’s elevator. After he retired from Wheat Growers in 1986 he began working for Brent Zimmerman in his farming operation. He was well into his 80’s when he finally retired. Coleen passed away in October 2009. After her death he continued to live in Bristol until recently when he moved to his daughter’s home in Aberdeen. Ike enjoyed farming, gardening, playing cards and following the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. He also enjoyed attending his great grandchildren’s sporting events and driving, visiting family and friends throughout the countryside. Ike passed away on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Aberdeen, South Dakota at the age of 92 years, 2 months and 28 days. Survivors include his eight children, Cheryl Finstad (& special friend, Greg Wolf) of Aberdeen, SD, Norma (Don) Shanholts of Groton, SD, Barbara (Don) Bawek of Pickerel Lake, SD, Lynn (Jenny) Grimes of Conde, SD, Janet (Benji) McPartland of Bradley, SD, Merry Grimes & Kari (Chad) Casey both of Aberdeen, SD, and Mark Grimes of Conde, SD; two sisters, Donna (Warren) Wilkens of Zimmerman, MN and Arda (Densley) Zambo of Groton, SD; eighteen grandhchildren and twenty three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two daughters and one brother, Forrest.
