Prudence Orton

Prudence Orton, 106 of Webster died on Friday October 14, 2016 at Bethesda Home in Webster. Her funeral will be 2 P.M. Saturday October 22, 2016 at Hope Lutheran Church in Summit, Rev. Justin Neugebauer will officiate. Burial will be in the Ortley Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Prudence Davidson Orton was born to on May 7, 1910 to Albert and Alma (Amundson) Davidson in Lynn Township, Day County, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Tabor Lutheran Church. She attended country school near her home in Lynn Township and graduated from Webster High School in 1930. She was the eldest in the family and helped with her younger siblings or wherever needed. Prudence received her teaching certificate and taught at a rural school until 1938, when the family moved to Ortley, South Dakota. On February 28, 1940, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Clarence Orton. The couple lived in San Mateo, California for a year and a half before returning to South Dakota. The couple operated a variety store in Summit, South Dakota until 1949, when they purchased the Orton family farm. Prudence helped on the farm and took great pride in it. After the couple retired from farming, they attended many auction and estate sales where they would purchase and restore antique furniture. In 1979, the couple moved to a new home in Webster, South Dakota. Clarence passed away in 2002. After his passing, she remained in her home until moving to Bethesda Home in Webster. She was content with her life there and appreciated the excellent staff and the care they provided. Prudence was a member at Hope Lutheran Church in Summit where she was active in Sara Circle. She was also a member at the Golden Age Club in Webster. She enjoyed flower gardening, cooking, baking Norwegian goodies, reading, quilting, and photography that entailed beautiful landscape pictures as well as photos of her loved ones. She also had a passion for poetry, but above all she enjoyed time spent with her family and friends. Prudence was a special lady and will be sorely missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her sister Arlene Hovland, sister-in-law Violet Davidson, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, Albin, Clarence, Scotty, Lester, two sisters, Dorothy and Baby Davidson in infancy.
