Orville Melvin Brandlee was born on May 23, 1928 to Andrew and Florence (Kolkman) Brandlee on the family farm in Day County, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at Bergen Lutheran Church. He attended country school in Union Township through 8th grade and then moved to Bristol with his grandparents so he could attend Bristol High School. He graduated in 1947. After his education, he worked at Davidson Oil Company in Bristol.
On November 21, 1948 he was united in marriage to Marjorie Gill. The couple made their home in Bristol until 1952, then the couple moved to the family farm and raised their three sons, Warren, Mark, and Tim. In 1997, the couple moved to Bristol, but he continued to farm as much as he physically could. Orville farmed until recent years. Only two years ago, at the age of 88, he helped move bales!
Orville was a member of Bergen Lutheran Church where he served on the church board. He was also a member of the Farmers Elevator Board, FHA, and the Union Township Board. Farming was Orville’s passion, even fencing was an enjoyable pastime for him. He also liked watching the Minnesota Twins, and when his boys were younger spent Sunday’s playing baseball in the yard. He was a kind man and loved his family dearly.
Orville passed away at Bristol, South Dakota at the age of 90 years, 3 months, and 27 days.
