Olive Leona Ives was born on September 17, 1933, to Ray and Ellen (Hilleson) Ives at Hillhead, South Dakota. She was baptized at the church parsonage in Veblen, South Dakota and was later confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church near Veblen. She attended elementary school at Hillhead and rural Hillhead (LaBelle, Marshall County, South Dakota). Olive graduated from Veblen High School in 1951. She furthered her education at Northern Teacher’s College in Aberdeen where she obtained her teaching certificate. She taught for one year in the rural elementary school she had attended as a young girl. Due to a very bad winter, she moved to Minneapolis and took employment at an insurance office.

On February 14, 1953, she married Roger Lee Grimsrud at Zion Lutheran Church. The couple made their home on a farm near Hillhead. To this union two children, Royce and Lori, were born while living on the farm. In 1956, the family moved to Britton, South Dakota. While living in Britton, Olive was active in the First Lutheran Church and Jaycettes.

In September of 1966, the family moved to Webster, South Dakota where they joined St. John’s Lutheran Church. Olive began working at the hospital in Webster and continued to work there for more than 22 years. She enjoyed the challenge of her work. Olive was active in bible studies at St. John’s as well as WELCA. She taught Sunday school and vacation bible school for many years. She was also a member of Jr. Websterian Study Club. She served as president of the South Dakota Medical Record Association and was also passionate about working with senior citizens in Senior Health Information and Insurance Education. Olive received an award from the governor for her volunteer work over the years.

She enjoyed playing bridge and whist, as well as reading and dancing. Olive liked visiting with family and friends over a cup of coffee. She was very fond of traveling and cherished the memories made, especially of their 25th wedding anniversary trip to Hawaii. Above all else, she cherished time spent with her family.

Olive passed away Sunday, February 2, 2025, at Webster, South Dakota, at the age of 91 years, 4 months, and 16 days.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband Roger of Webster, SD, son Royce (Lunette) Grimsrud of Veblen, SD and Lori (Jim) Keller of Webster, SD, brother Darwin Ives of Claremont, SD, seven grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild on the way!
