Marianne Aadland, 94, of Roslyn, passed away peacefully at her home in Roslyn, on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
Memorial services will be 2:00pm Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Skudesnes Lutheran Church. Her ashes will be laid to rest along with her beloved daughter, Sylvia "Koko, in the church cemetery.
Memorial visitation will be 5-7pm with a 6:30 prayer service, Friday, May 2, 2025 at Fiksdal Funeral Service.
Marianne was born Marijana Both on July 4, 1930 in Osijek, Yugoslavia (now Croatia) to Josef and Maria Both (Latsch). She and her mother and sister Hela fled from Croatia in 1944 and she eventually moved to Germany.
Years later while in Germany, she met Justin “Buddy” Aadland and they were married on January 13, 1956 in Augsburg, Germany. To this union four girls were born: Judith Aadland (still born), Diana Aadland, Sylvia “Koko” Aadland, and Susan “Suzi” Aadland. And… there were some others in the community who called her mom (and some called her grandma) and she thought of them as her children too and loved them like her own.
Since moving to the US, she worked many jobs including helping Buddy with farming, and she always had a vegetable garden. She went to work for NESDCAP in the 1970’s in Sisseton where she assisted with many community projects and welfare checks. For the last 17 years of her working life she worked as a home health aide for the Day County Nurse’s office where she did home visits with the county nurse and provided transportation for elderly and disabled people, usually for doctor visits.
After retirement in 1995, she enjoyed gardening, traveling, visiting with family and friends, and driving friends to wherever they wanted to go. But when she turned 85 she told us all that she wasn’t going to drive anymore, she was done.
She is survived by her daughters Diana and Suzi and son-in-law James “Bud” Burnham, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, daughters Sylvia and Judith, as well as many other relatives and friends. At her inurnment, her loving daughter Sylvia’s remains will also be buried. Her daughters believe she was the most loving, caring, selfless person on the planet… and a real firecracker.
