WAUBAY- Lorna Phillips, 82 of Redfield and formally of Waubay died on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at Golden Living Center in Redfield. Her funeral will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Waubay, Rev. Janet Miller officiating. Burial will be at Lakewood Cemetery, Waubay. Closed casket visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service (fiksdalfuneral.com) in Webster on Monday 5-7 P.M. with a 7 P.M. Prayer Service. Lorna Irene Barry was born on Saturday, December 11, 1926 to Walter and Verna Mae (Campbell) Barry on a farm near Peever, South Dakota. She attended school in Sisseton. On September 5, 1947 she married Alvin Phillips at Watertown, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple made their home in Waubay. Where she was a homemaker and raised her children. In 1970 they became foster parents and over the years were foster parents to over 72 children. In the early 1980’s she went back to school and in 1984 graduated from VoTech in Watertown as a Human Services Tech. She then worked for the Waubay School System until her retirement in 1997. Mr. Phillips passed away in 1994. She continued living in her home until a recent stay at Bethesda Home in Webster. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Waubay. Her hobbies included crocheting, walking, reading and playing bingo. She loved visits from her children and grandchildren and visiting with friends. Lorna passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at Redfield, South Dakota at the age of 82 years, 5 months and 8 days. Survivors include five sons, Arnold (Arlet) Phillips of East Grand Forks, MN, Russell Phillips of Highmore, SD, Ronald (Lydia) Phillips of Alpena, SD, John Phillips and Jeff Phillips both of Waubay, SD; two daughters. Faye (Gerald) Pies and Dawn Murphy both of Waubay, SD; one sister, Lucille Lewandowski of Waubay, SD, twenty three grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Wallace and Edward Welch and two sisters, Ardis Thiel and Lola Golden.
