Lois Opitz, 93, of Roslyn and formerly of Eden, passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at strand Kjorsvig Living Center in Roslyn.
A celebration of Lois' life will be 2pm Saturday, January 27, 2024, at the funeral home chapel. A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow the service. Inurnment will be at St. Otto's Catholic Cemetery near Webster at a later date.
Lois Marie Grosek was born on October 17, 1930, to Frank and Jeanette (Swant) Grosek on the family farm near Butler, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Otto’s Catholic Church in Webster. She attended country school briefly and then continued her education at St. Otto’s Parochial School and later Webster High School. After her education, she worked various jobs in the Webster area.
On October 30, 1950, she was united in marriage to Ambrose “Bruce” Opitz at St. Otto’s in Webster. The couple made their home south of Eden and raised their six children, Bev, Bonnie, Wayne, Kenny, Renae, and Tommy. Lois worked alongside Bruce with their farming operation, as well as her everyday duties as a homemaker. The couple along with some partners purchased The Farmers Bar in Eden where Lois worked while they owned it. Lois also worked at Countryside and later at Co-op in Roslyn. Bruce passed away in 1997, and Lois continued to live on the farm.
Lois was a member at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden where she was active in the altar society. She was also a member of the Webster VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening, and was known for her delicious meals and baked goodies. She was a social butterfly with a witty sense of humor and was a friend to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Lois passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at Roslyn, South Dakota at the age of 93 years, 2 months, and 24 days.
She will be forever loved by her children, Bev Webster of Roslyn, SD, Bonnie (Dave) Moelter of Arcadia, WI, Wayne (Jenene) Opitz of Roslyn, SD, Kenny (Lori) Opitz of Eden, SD, Renae Jacobs of Buffalo, MN, and Tommy (Barb) Opitz of Hartford, SD, 17 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild on the way. She is also survived by five sisters, Marian (John) Carpenter of Athens, GA, Alberta (Dick) Schiley of Webster, SD, Carol Schmit of Webster, SD, Donna Nelson of Burnsville, MN, Rita Malboeuf of NC, and two sisters-in-law, Eugenia Gardner of Aberdeen, SD and Florence Opitz of Aurora, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers, Fritz, Raymond, Don, LeRoy, and Eddie, and three sisters, Irene, Kathlene, and Lucille.
