ABERDEEN – Joan Mathiason 80 of Aberdeen and formerly of Webster died Saturday August 8, 2015 at Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday August 11, 2015 at American Lutheran Church in Webster. Rev. Jan FitzGibbon will officiate. Burial will be in the Webster Cemetery.

Joan Marie Roth was born on Sunday October 28, 1934 to Dewey and Arlene (McMahon) Roth at Webster, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Webster. She attended school in Webster and later obtained her GED. During high school she worked at an ice cream parlor in town.
On May 10th 1954 she married Kenneth Mathiason at Webster. The couple made their home in Webster until they were relocated to San Diego, California due to Kenneth’s duties in the service. In the late 1950’s the family returned to South Dakota and settled in Aberdeen where Joan was employed by Artz Cameras. Kenneth passed away in 1991. Joan continued to live independently until 2004 when her health failed and she moved to Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen where she resided until her passing.
Joan was a very sociable person with a zest for life! She was extremely talented in many things to which she enjoyed greatly. Just to name a few would be playing the accordion to which she took up at the age of 11 years and in later formed a band with her sisters known as “The Ladybugs”. She was the first female advanced class radio “Ham Operator” in the tri-state region. She also enjoyed knitting, calligraphy, sewing, woodworking, camping, fishing, traveling, and above all spending time with her beloved family and extended family.
Joan passed away at Aberdeen, South Dakota at the age of 80 years, 9 months, and 11 days.
She will be forever missed by her children Dan (Connie) Mathiason of Aberdeen, SD, Lori Materi and Amy Mathiason both of Sioux Falls, SD, brother David (Linda) Roth of Webster, SD, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth, two brothers, and three sisters.
