EDEN- Jerome McCarlson 62, of Eden, died on Sunday, October 07, 2007 at the Marshall County Healthcare Center in Britton. His funeral will be at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, October 11, 2007 at Tabor Lutheran Church near Webster, Rev. Derek Kalkes officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Wednesday, 4-8 P.M. and prior to services on Thursday. Jerome Arden McCarlson was born on Monday, December 18, 1944 to Arnold and Lydia (Johnson) McCarlson at Webster, South Dakota. The family made their home near Saron Lutheran Church northeast of Roslyn in Day County. He attended country school and graduated from Roslyn High School in 1962. In December 1963 he entered the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He also was stationed in Germany and then at the Pentagon. After he was honorably discharged in December 1969 he returned to the Roslyn area where he worked for area farmers and farmed on his own. He also was a member of the South Dakota National Guard for thirteen years. On July 3, 1974 he married Darlene Stabnow at Selby, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple made their home in Britton where he was custodian at the school. In 1976 they moved to a farm near Pierpont, then in 1981 they moved into Pierpont and in 1982 after a house fire they moved to Langford. After the couple divorced he moved to the Black Hills where he worked for a short time. In the early 1990’s he moved to the Eden area where he farmed and then into Eden. He was a life member of the V.F.W. in Britton and was a member of the Henning-Shemanski Post 267 at Grenville. He was an avid sportsman, hunting and fishing with family and friends. He also panned for gold in the Black Hills and had fun with his metal detector. He kept a large garden at his home and played bingo and traveled to the casinos. Jerome passed away on Sunday, October 7, 2007 at Britton, South Dakota at the age of 62 years, 10 months and 20 days. Survivors include one son, Andy (Tanya) McCarlson of Bremerton, WA; one daughter, Lucy Crosby of Groton, SD; eight grandchildren, Braden, Zachary and Chloe Crosby, McKenzie Dahlberg, Juston Marlok, Alexis Mann, Anika and Tiffany McCarlson; a special friend, Donna Jean Carr of Eden, SD; three brothers, Paul McCarlson of Webster, SD, David (Cheryl) McCarlson of Bowdle, SD & Randy (Carol) McCarlson of Oklahoma City, OK; and two sisters, Ann (Bob) Rowe of Brookings, SD and Linda (Don) McCreary of Langford, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents.
