Janice M. Brakefield, 75, of Webster, passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at Sun Dial Manor in Bristol.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Monday, December 23, 2024, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Webster. Interment will be at St. Otto's Catholic Cemetery, Webster.
Visitation will be 5-7 pm Sunday, December 22, 2024 at the funeral home.
Janice Marie Krista was born on May 1, 1949, to Michael and Mathilda (Waletich) Krista at Sisseton, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden. She attended parochial school through the eighth grade in Eden and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1967. She went on to Stewarts School of Hairstyling in Aberdeen and moved to Rapid City where she worked at a salon until 1971, when she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota.
On March 4, 1972, she married James Brakefield at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden. The couple made their home in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. To this union two children were born, Krista and Brian. In 1977, the family moved to Webster where Janice worked at Lorraine’s House of Beauty. In 1979, Janice started her own beauty shop in her home, Southside Beauty. After 50 years of making ladies look and feel beautiful in Day County, Janice retired in 2018. She was more than just a hairstylist to her clients; she was a friend and confidant. She shared her labors of love with everyone she met.
Janice and Jim enjoyed traveling. The traveled to Mexico, Jamaica, Hawaii, Alaksa, and Florida. As a family, they enjoyed camping and road trips over the years. Janice also enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, quilting, making gifts for her grandchildren, and snowmobiling in the Black Hills. Janice was a fun loving person who just loved a good time!
She was a member of Christ the King Catholic church where she was active in the altar society, Catholic Daughters, and help orchestrate the church directory. She was also a member of the Cruisin’ Classics Car Club.
Janice lost her long, hard, battle with Alzheimer’s Disease on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at Bristol, South Dakota at the age of 75 years, 7 months, and 17 days.
She will be forever loved and greatly missed by her husband James Brakefield of Webster, SD, children, Krista (Bob) Baumgartner of Two Rivers, WI, and Brian (Melissa) Brakefield of Aberdeen, SD, grandchildren, Emily Baumgartner (Kurt) Celmer of Ft. Riley, KS, Olivia Baumgartner (Zach) of De Pere, WI, Sarah Baumgartner of LaCrosse, WI, Elizabeth Brakefield of Spearfish, SD, Kyle Brakefield of Aberdeen, SD, and Megan Brakefield of Aberdeen, SD. She also leaves behind her siblings, Larry Krista of Eden, SD, Marge Krista of Eden, SD, and Pete (Mavis) Krista of Britton, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Tom Krista and George Krista and one infant brother.
Janice’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all family and friends who have shown love and support these past 10 years, when her battle with Alzheimer’s began. They would also like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Sun Dial Manor for the excellent care she received for the past 5 ½ years.
