Irene Tiggelaar, 93, widow of H. Frank Tiggelaar, of Webster and formerly of Waubay passed away Saturday February 1, 2020 at Bethesda Home in Webster.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday June 27, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Waubay. Inurnment will be in the Lakewood Cemetery.
Irene was born to Carl and Katie (Sigette) Hammrich near Ipswich, South Dakota on February 23. 1926. Irene attended country school thru 8th grade.
On July 9, 1946 she married H. Frank Tiggelaar in Ipswich and moved to Waubay, South Dakota where they made their home. Irene worked many different jobs from waitressing to painting.
Irene was a 4-H leader, member of the Birthday club, a certified cooks assistant for Waubay School district for 17 years (both in the old and new school), the site supervisor for 8 years for the Waubay nutrition program at the senior citizen center in Waubay. Irene was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Waubay where she taught religion classes and was the president of the altar society.
Irene was a 74-year, lifetime member of the Brady-Monson Post #129 American Legion Auxiliary; she held an office and chaired many different committees during this time period. She and Frank repaired and made hundreds of Poppy Wreaths for the area cemeteries.
Irene loved sewing and crafts; she started her sewing career doing clothing repairs, hems, etc. She continued on by making her own patterns from newspapers. She made many prom, bridesmaid and wedding dresses; some were even “Irene T.” originals. She made cheerleading outfits and Pom-pom’s from yards of netting. Irene enjoyed crocheting, embroidery along with playing all kinds of cards, bingo and board games.
Irene is survived by her daughters, Glenda (Carlton Jr.) Barse of Waubay, SD and Bonnie Holmquist of Milbank, SD; three grandchildren, Staci, Erek and Sarah ; three step-grandchildren, Jason, Paul and Becky; six great grandchildren, seven step-great grandchildren; two brothers and one half-sister and many nieces and nephews. Irene was preceded in death by her husband, parents, step-mother, three brothers, three sisters, one step-sister, one half-brother and one half-sister.
