Irene Herold, 97 of Webster, SD, formerly of Waubay, SD, passed away on Thursday, November 5th, 2020 at Bethesda Nursing Home.
Private funeral service will be on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at 2 P.M. and will be livestreamed on Fiksdal Funeral Service Facebook page. Burial will be at Lakewood Cemetery in Waubay.
Public walk-through visitation will be on Tuesday from 5-7 P.M. at the funeral home.
Irene Marie Anderson was born on September 21, 1923 to Philip and Clara (Aslesen) Anderson in Grant County, SD. The family moved to Waubay when she was 5 years old. Irene graduated from Waubay school in 1942. She was united in marriage to Ernest on October 15, 1942. Under emergency certification, she taught at Spring Grove School in Roberts County during the war in 1943. Also, during the war, Irene did office work in California while Ernest was away serving as a paratrooper in the Army. After the war the couple made their home in Waubay where they raised 3 children, Douglas, Debra, and Donna. After being a homemaker for many years, she started working for the Waubay School lunch program in 1968. After 29 years, she retired as lunch supervisor and then became the school library aide until her official retirement in 2004. Ernest passed away on November 21, 1990.
Irene was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Waubay, WELCA, and the church choir. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, sewing, embroidering and daily crossword puzzles.
Irene loved babies and never passed up an opportunity to rock and sing them to sleep with her beautiful lullabies.
Irene passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at the age of 97 years, 1 month, and 15 days.
She will be missed by one son, Douglas (Cathy) Herold of Waubay two daughters, Debra (Jerry) Nepodal of Lorton, VA and Donna (David) Lauseng of Aberdeen; two brothers, Arnold (Bonnie) Anderson of Webster and Philip “Al” (Gladys) Anderson of Bradford, TN; one sister, Norma Cook of South Bay, FL; one sister-in-law, Beverly Anderson of Rapid City; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 step great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild. She has been reunited in heaven with her parents, husband, brother Orville Anderson and sister Lorraine (Ken) Lickness.
