Irene Aadland

Irene Elizabeth Swanson was born on Thursday, June 17, 1920 to John and Anna Marie (Larson) Swanson in Webster, South Dakota. She was raised on the Swanson family homestead South of Roslyn in Raritan Township. She was baptized and confirmed at American Lutheran Church in Webster. She went to country school near her home and attended Roslyn High School where she was class president and graduated in 1938. After graduation she remained on the family farm to help her father. On April, 24, 1946 she married Howard Aadland at Webster. After their marriage the couple made their home where they raised their family and farmed on the Aadland homestead in Lynn Township, east of Pierpont. She worked at Strand-Kjorsvig Community Rest Home in Roslyn as a CNA. In 1977 they retired from farming and moved to Roslyn. After years of working at SK Home she provided daycare for her neighbors, the Lardy family. Mr. Aadland passed away in January 1981. After his death she continued to make her home in Roslyn. In 1997 she started working at the Roslyn School where she was currently employed. She was a member of Skudesnes Lutheran Church near Pierpont where she was active in Ladies Aide and Circle. She had held many church positions over the years. She belonged to the Roslyn Garden Club and the Roslyn Legion Auxiliary. She loved gardening and had won many ribbons at the fair for her flowers and plants. Irene also canned, made jellies, baked goodies and quilted. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing scrabble. She always looked forward to the holidays when family would gather and she always had a kind word about everyone. Irene passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2008 at Webster, South Dakota at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 6 days. Survivors include one son, Layne Aadland of Roslyn, SD; a daughter, Randie (Kevin) Schlager of Valley City, ND; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, David and John, one brother and one sister
