Howard Herman Bartelt

WAUBAY – Howard H. Bartelt 80 of Waubay died Saturday August 1, 2015 at Aberdeen Health in Aberdeen. Memorial Services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday August 7, 2015 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Waubay. Rev. Charles Bunk will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Lakewood Cemetery near Waubay. There will be memorial visitation one hour prior to the service on Friday. Howard Herman Bartelt was born on Friday March 29, 1935 to Alvin and Irma (Krause) Bartelt at Webster, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Waubay, South Dakota. He attended country school near the family farm northwest of Waubay. After his education he held various jobs in sales throughout the region. His most recent employment was with Victor Lundeen who Howard often referred to as “family”. On June 17, 1956 he was united in marriage to Lorraine Mikkelson at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Waubay. To this union two children were born, a son Kim and a daughter Candace. The family made their home on the Bartelt family farm until the couple moved into Waubay and eventually settling at a place on Blue Dog Lake near Waubay. Lorraine passed away in 2001. Howard continued to live at their home at the lake until May of this year when his health failed. Howard was a member at Our Saviors Lutheran Church where he served on the Church Council, he was a member on the Waubay City Council, Waubay Volunteer Fire Department, Webster Lions Club, and the Waubay Sportsman Club. Howard enjoyed the outdoors. Fishing, hunting, and maintaining his lake home and lodge were among his favorite. He also enjoyed grilling and trying new recipes. The aroma from his garage was usually that of pork loin, steak, or walleye. He kept a daily routine of “solving the world’s problems” with his coffee buddies and cruising through town with his dog Katie. People from Waubay could set their watches and expect to see Howard driving his suburban with the dog hanging out the window! Howard passed away at Aberdeen, South Dakota at the age of 80 years, 4 months, and 9 days. He is survived by his daughter Candace (Lyle) Zirbel of Ortley, SD, 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren (and one more on the way). He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lorraine, son Kim Bartelt, and one brother Elroy Bartelt.
