Herbert "Herb" Gelhaus

Herbert Paul Gelhaus was born on July 18, 1944, to Melvin and Vera (Baule) Gelhaus at Webster, South Dakota. He was baptized at the Gelhaus family farm and confirmed at American Lutheran Church in Webster. He attended country school near the family farm and graduated from Webster High School in 1962. After his education, he began farming alongside his father. 

On September 17, 1969, he was united in marriage to Donna Osterhoff at United Methodist Church in Webster. To this union three daughters were born, Charlotte, Cheryl, and Christine. The family made their home on the Gelhaus farmstead, southeast of Webster. In 1994, Herb retired from farming, but continued to work for Kuecker Seed until the present time.  

Herb was a member of Journey of Faith Church (formerly United Methodist Church) where he served on several boards over the years. He was also a certified weather spotter for the National Weather Service for over 40 years. He was a member of the Morton Township Board and was also on the Morton Church Restoration committee. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, racing go-carts as a kid, tinkering in his shop, and attending sporting events for his children and grandchildren. His love for his family was unwavering.

Herb will be forever loved and greatly missed by his daughters, Charlotte (Mike) Carda of Huron, SD, Cheryl (Mike) McCreary of Webster, SD, and Christine (Eric) Townsend of Milbank, SD, eight grandchildren, Emily (Troy) Forbush, Brandon (Megan) Carda, Jobi (David) Weidler, Evan McCreary, Jaiden McCreary, Jeron McCreary, Zayda Townsend, and Bree Townsend, great-grandchildren, Delaney, Quincy, and Wesley Forbush, and Baby Boy Weidler (due in April). He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant brothers, and his beloved wife Donna in 2021.
