Helen Stromseth, 90 of Eden died on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at a Roslyn Nursing Home.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden, burial will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday 5-7 P.M. ending with a 7 P.M. Rosary.
Helen Josie Block was born on Wednesday, July 29, 1925 to Joseph M. and Mary (Lewno) Block on the family farm east of Grenville, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grenville. She attended parochial school in Grenville and finished through the eighth grade at a country school near her home. In 1943 she moved to live with her sister, Amelia in Webster and worked at Wist Produce Company. 1946 to 1948 she lived with her sister, Sylvia in Minneapolis and worked at a cookie factory and then returned to the Grenville area.
On May 25, 1949 she was united in marriage to Norbert Stromseth at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grenville. After their marriage the couple lived for a very short time in Webster and a farm near Grenville. In 1950 the couple moved to a farm southeast of Eden in Eden Township, Marshall County where they made their home and raised their three children, Gary, Lana Mary and Melanie. They retired from farming and later, in 2011, moved to Webster. Norbert passed away in August 2011. After his death she continued to live in her apartment in Webster until 2013 when she moved to Strand-Kjorsvig Community Rest Home in Roslyn.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden where she was active in the Altar Society, sang in the church choir and was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. She loved the outdoors, gardening, singing and playing guitar (in her younger days). She enjoyed helping other people to make their life better and spoiling her grandchildren.
Helen passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at Roslyn, South Dakota at the age of 90 years, 8 months and 19 days.
Survivors include one son, Gary (Barb) Stromseth of Eden, SD; one daughter, Melanie Stromseth of Aberdeen, SD; one brother, Carl (Doris) Block of Waubay, SD; one sister, Amelia Murschel of Aberdeen, SD; and two grandchildren, Becky (Ethan) Allen and Ryan (Rachel) Stromseth. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, Lana Mary and three sisters, Sylvia Dolney, Angela Nicolay and an infant sister.
