Hattie Lorraine Phillips, of Brookings, formerly of Webster and Pierpont, SD passed away Sunday, May 18, 2008 at the United Retirement Center. Funeral Services have been set for 11:00am Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at the United Methodist Church, Webster, SD. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD. Fiksdal Funeral Service of Webster and Rude's Funeral Home of Brookings are in charge of the arrangements. Hattie Lorraine Birkeland was born October 28, 1912 at Pierpont, SD to Norwegian immigrant parents Christian H. and Anna M. (Askevold) Birkeland. She was confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pierpont. She attended a country school and graduated from Pierpont High School in 1932. With the economic conditions at the time, she stayed with her parents on the family farm and assisted in the operation of the farm. She married Alvah R. Phillips November 12, 1944 at Pierpont. She relocated to the Phillips farm near Webster where they farmed until retiring to Brookings in 1998. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the United Methodist Church. She was a member of Methodist Ladies Aid where she assisted in the Kiwanis meals and was a Sunday School teacher for several years, and she participated in the Annual Cancer Society Drive for a number of years. She was active in the Farm Bureau where she was County Woman’s Chair for several years. She enjoyed her flowers, gardening and handiwork. She always enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Survivors include three sons: Richard Phillips of Pierre, SD; Reuben and Joan Phillips of Baltic, SD; and David and Margaret Phillips of Bismarck, ND: one daughter Patricia and Gregory Micko of Brookings, SD: seven grandchildren, Kevin Micko, Amy and Jamie Lo, Lisa Micko, Sarah Phillips, Jon and Marianke Phillips, Nicholas and Alicia Phillips, Mark Phillips; four great-grandchildren and sister-in-law, Verna Birkeland of Bristol, SD. Her parents, her husband, one infant son Gordon, her brother Arthur, and all her immediate cousins preceded her in death.
