Gladys Walton

BERESFORD- Gladys Walton, 83 of Beresford and formerly of Waubay, died on Monday, April 14, 2008 at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford. Her funeral will be at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Fiksdal Funeral Chapel in Webster, Janet Miller officiating. Inurnment will be at the Webster cemetery. Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Friday, 4-8 P.M. with a 7 P.M. prayer service. Gladys Hope Bertz was born on Friday,May 16, 1924 to Charles and Magdalena (Ledner) Bertz at Leola, South Dakota. When she was a young girl the family moved to Webster where she graduated from Webster High School. After high school she helped her mother cleaning homes and washing clothes for other families. In 1941 she married Leo Riese and they made their home on a farm between Webster and Watertown. Later, on June 29, 1946 she was united in marriage to Joy Walton at Webster. The couple made their home on the Walton family farm in Wheatland Township, Day County, South Dakota southeast of Webster where they farmed. While living on the farm Gladys worked at different times for Webster businesses. In the fall of 1991 they retired, sold the farm and moved to Waubay. Mr. Walton passed away in 1998. After his death she continued to live in Waubay and on October 1, 2007 entered Bethesda Home in Beresford. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Waubay until it closed. She liked to fish and enjoyed gardening, wildlife and playing cards. She also enjoyed visiting with family, friends and neighbors. Gladys passed away on Monday, April 14, 2008 at Beresford, South Dakota at the age of 83 years, 10 months and 29 days. Survivors include one son, Bob (Gail) Walton of Beresford, SD; two grandsons, Tracey (Kris) Walton of Canton, SD and Jay (Beth) Walton of Sioux Falls, SD; and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and 2 sisters.
