WEBSTER- Gerald Schimmel 74 of Webster died on Thursday, March 29, 2007 at Bethesda Home in Webster. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at Christ The King Catholic Church in Webster, Burial will be in St. Otto’s Cemetery, Webster Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Monday 2-4 then continuing at the church until 8 P.M. with a 7 P.M. Rosary & Scriptural Prayer service. Gerald Harvey Schimmel was born on Wednesday, December 28, 1932 to Harvey and Edith (Herr) Schimmel on the family farm west of Butler in Valley Township, Day County, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at Butler Lutheran Church and attended country school near his home. After he received his education he farmed with his parents. On September 27, 1955 he married Dorothy Block at Webster, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple made their home and farmed near Butler. In May 1962 he started working for the Day County Highway Department and the couple moved to Webster. In 1989 he semi retired and worked part-time for the highway department, retiring in 1995. Also from 1987-1995, Gerald drove a newspaper route for the Aberdeen American News. He entered Bethesda Home in January 2005. Mrs. Schimmel passed away in March 2006. He was a member of Christ The King Catholic Church in Webster. He was an avid gardener and loved caring for his lawn. Over the years he had won Lawn of the Week several times. He also loved coin collecting, playing cards, bingo and going to the casino. He had favorite television programs he watched and visiting with family and friends. Gerald passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2007 at Webster, South Dakota at the age of 74 years, 3 months and 1 day. Survivors include a son, Greg (Amber) Schimmel of Webster, SD; a daughter Dawn (Shawn) Rithmiller of Webster, SD; two brothers, Harold (Marilyn) Schimmel of Watertown, SD and Gary (Bonnie) Schimmel of Bristol, SD; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one brother, Larry.
