He attended country school and finished grade school at St. Otto’s Parochial School and graduated from Webster High School in 1965. Gary furthered his education at South Dakota State University (Go Jacks!), graduating in 1970. While in college he worked various jobs which included lead singer in the band, “The New Breed”.

On May 9, 1970, he married his best friend, Sally Brostad. The couple moved to Columbus, Georgia and Gary enlisted in the United States Army. He completed officer training at Ft. Benning, Georgia. In July, the couple moved to Lawon, Oklahoma where he worked as postal officer, in charge of ceremonies and mess officer at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma.

The couple returned to Webster where Gary was engaged in farming with his family. Gary and Sally raised their three children, Matthew James, Jessica Jean, and Samuel John on the Hubsch family homestead. Gary joined the South Dakota National Guard and was commander of the Aberdeen Unit. He continued to farm until failing health forced him to retire.
