Farol Dayle Beesley Hendrickson was born September 25, 1935 to Herbert and Amanda (Waller) Beesley of Clarksville, Iowa. Her dad died when she was two years old which precipitated her mother and her to move back to South Dakota to live with her grandparents. She attended Rusk 109 country school through the fifth grade. Her mother remarried and the family moved to a farm in Clark County. She then attended Blaine 130 country school for two years, and when the school closed, returned to Rusk 109. She then attended Webster High School, graduating in 1953. During this time she met her future husband of 66 years, Jim. They were married August 19, 1953, at the American Lutheran Church, Webster, SD. Due to the Korean War and Jim being drafted, they spent the first 18 months of married life at Fort Gordon, Georgia, where Carol Jean was born. Following Jim’s discharge in 1955, Jim and Farol returned to South Dakota and lived on different farms until 1958 when they purchased a farm one mile east of Roslyn. Four more children quickly came along: Jon Allen, Joni Kay, Julie Ann and Jodie Lynn (who passed away at birth).
Along with being a busy farm wife and mother of four, Farol worked outside of the home at various jobs: waitress for Judy Schaunaman’s North Side Café and as a store clerk at Howard’s Market and Darlene’s Market. She was then hired to work at the Day County Assessor’s office before moving on to her true calling at Strand-Kjorsvig Community Rest Home as a kitchen aide and later as a laundry aide for 31 years.
Farol was an active and dedicated member of Fron Lutheran Church for over 60 years. She was a member of the Fron Women’s Group, serving as president and later as treasurer; Sunday School Superintendant and teacher for many years; and a church council member. She was also active in the Rudolph Baukol American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, and a member of the local Hospital Foundation Board for many years.
Farol was well known for her scalloped potatoes which she generously donated to numerous community and family functions. Although her ancestry was mostly German, she loved all things Norwegian (especially her Jimmy), and was especially fond of making lefse (with Jimmy assisting with the turning), krumkaka and rosettes. Her Christmas baking was over-the-top with enough to last until Easter!
Farol had a witty sense of humor and could always be counted on for a “smart remark.” Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were definitely her pride and joy! She enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, sewing, embroidery and spending time with family and friends, especially at the family cabin on Pickerel Lake.
Farol passed away Thursday November 28, 2019 at Webster, South Dakota at the age of 84 years, 2 months, and 3 days.
She will be forever loved and greatly missed by her husband Jim of Roslyn, SD, daughters; Carol (Walt) Pies of Blaine, MN, Joni Hendrickson of Sioux Falls, SD, and Julie (Dale) Pitzl of Eden, SD, daughter-in-law Judy Hendrickson of Roslyn, SD, sister Janie Stianson and brother Galen Bauman both of Watertown, SD, and sister-in-law Arlene Nelson of Mesa, AZ. She also leaves behind her beloved 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren as well as her beloved cat, Sassy. She was welcomed into heaven by her parents, daughter Jodie, son Jon, and grandsons Michael Pies, and Jeremy Hendrickson as well as sister-in-law Linda Bauman and brother-in-law Neil Stianson.
