Evelyn Pies

WAUBAY- Evelyn Pies, 91 of Waubay died on Monday, February 14, 2011 at her daughters home near Waubay. Her funeral will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Waubay, Rev. Janet Miller officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Lakewood Cemetery, Waubay. Visitation will be on Saturday at the church one hour prior to services. Fiksdal Funeral Service of Webster is in charge of the arrangements. Evelyn Mary Althoff was born on Friday May 2, 1919 to Simon and Ella (Gramberg) Althoff on a farm in Morton Township, Day County, South Dakota. She was baptized at the Norwegian Lutheran Church (Our Saviors) in Waubay. The family lived on various farms in Day and Roberts County. She attended country school in Waubay Township and then lived and helped on her parents farm. On September 29, 1943 she was united in marriage to Rudolph Pies at Waubay, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple made their home in Ortley Township, Roberts County and were engaged in beef, dairy and grain farming. They retired from active farming in 2001. Mr. Pies passed away in January 2009 and after his death she went to live with her daughter, Maxine Niles. She loved to milk cows. She also enjoyed collecting rocks, sewing, collecting recipes, riddles, wise sayings and bible verses. She also enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Evelyn passed away on Monday, February 14, 2011 at her daughters home at the age of 91 years, 9 months and 12 days. Survivors include three sons, Gerald (Faye) Pies, Delwin (Ann) Pies and Darrell (Bonnie) Pies all of Waubay, SD; five daughters, Maxine (Harlow) Niles of Waubay, SD, Laurel (Duane) Pehl of Barnard, SD, Sharon Junso of Milbank, SD, Diane (Terry) Anderson and Darlene Olson both of Ortley, SD; five brothers, Eugene (Oriet) Althoff of Webster, SD, Duane (Barbara) Althoff of Ortley, SD, Clarence Althoff of Yankton, SD, Virgil (Gaila) Althoff and Earl (Serine) Althoff both of Waubay, SD; three sisters, Marie (Dave) Leppin of Salem, OR, Dorothy (Lloyd) Pies of Sisseton, SD and Verna Knapp of Waubay, SD; 28 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Dale and Daniel, two sisters, Myrtle Young and Irene Pies, and one brother Harold.
