Elmer "Bud" Solberg

Elmer “Bud” Solberg was born on April 30, 1921 to Lauritz and Bethany (Lena Stavig) Solberg at home in Scotland Township near Butler, South Dakota. He was baptized on June 2, 1921 at home. He was confirmed at the Lily Lutheran Church. Elmer went his first three years of school in Lily, but then the family moved to Clark County where he attended country school. After his education Elmer moved back to Lily and was employed by Charlie Barber for five years. In 1943 he married LaVon (Aadson) at the Lily Lutheran Church. In 1947 Bud started working at the Phillip 66 Station in Lily. He owned and operated the station for 30 years. Bud then drove school bus for the Bristol School for three years. In 1977 Bud started working for the Day County Highway Department and worked there until his retirement in 1989. After his retirement he moved to Bethesda Home in April, 2001. He was very active in the town of Lily, including his membership on the town board as the Lily Mayor for several years. He was an active member of the Buffalo Plains Historical Society and Bud also served on the Lily Lutheran Church board for several years. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and helping mow at the farm. He was an avid basketball and baseball fan, but especially enjoyed the Minnesota Twins. He loved spending quality time with his family, they meant everything to him. Bud passed away at Webster, South Dakota on Sunday, September 10, 2006 at the age of 85 years, 4 months, and 10 days. Survivors include: one daughter; Judy (Larry) Herr of Bristol, SD, five grandchildren; LaRon (Jolene) Herr of Bristol, SD, Terry Herr of Kalamazoo, MI, Tammy (Bob) Plimpton of Crooks, SD, Stacey (Brett) Pierce of Madison, SD, Becky (Mike) Sudenga of Sioux Falls, SD, and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter; Lynell, his parents, five sisters; Ann Schoenbeck, Clara Lien, Mabel Herr, Agnes Fitting, Emma Nygaard, six brothers; Martin, Melvin, Albert, John, LeRoy, and Elmer at the age of five years.
