Eddie Pies, 91 of Webster died on Tuesday, May 01, 2012 at Bethesda Home in Webster. His funeral will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday May 5, 2012 at American Lutheran Church in Webster. Rev. Edward Paul Pies was born on Monday, March 28, 1921 to Edward Sr. and Ella (Ninke) Pies on the family farm in rural Day County, South Dakota east of Webster. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (now American Lutheran Church) in Webster. In his early childhood the family moved to a farm north of Webster where he grew up, attended North Webster country school and eventually took over the family farm. He married Lillian Johnson on July 10, 1954 at Tabor Lutheran Church, rural Webster. The couple continued to farm until ill health forced him to retire. He enjoyed being close to the earth. He preferred farming with horses to more modern technology. He liked raising animals and watching his crops grow. In later life he continued this through his love of gardening and flowers and his many special pets. He was a life-time member of what is now American Lutheran Church in Webster. When not farming, he loved to play. He spent many years playing baseball on a number of local teams. He was a league bowler for more than 50 years. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, and loved nothing more than a spirited game of six-handed pinochle. Eddie passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Webster, South Dakota at the age of 91 years, 1 month and 3 days. He is survived by his wife, Lillian; his children, Tim (Birgit) of Germany; Debra Pies of Aberdeen, SD, Sally Pies of Volga, SD, Melinda (Steve) Zimmerer of Plattsmouth, NE, Barbara (JD) Broderius of Greeley, CO; and grandchildren, Jamie, Abbie, and Katie Zimmerer and Kathryn and William Broderius. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Elsie Chilson.
