Dorothy Rose Neuberger, 85, of Eden, passed away peacefully, Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Coteau Des Prairies Hospital in Sisseton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Saturday, January 11, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden and will be livestreamed via our facebook page.

Visitation will be 5-7 pm Friday, January 10, 2025 at the church, closing with a scriptural wake service at 7 pm.

Dorothy (Hamling) Neuberger was born June 18, 1939, in Breckenridge, MN, to Henry and Theresa (Herding) Hamling. One of ten children, she grew up on a farm near Rosholt, SD. She attended elementary school in Rosholt and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1957. Following graduation, she headed to Minneapolis, MN, and earned a business degree from the Minnesota School of Business.

Dorothy met Hilary (Larry) Neuberger at The Ranch in Sisseton. Their long-distance courtship between Minneapolis and Eden led to their marriage on August 27, 1960. Together, they built a life on a farm near Eden, raising five children.

Dorothy was generous with her time and talent throughout her life. She was an amazing cook and made whipping up a meal for large groups look easy. If she knew you were visiting, she made sure your favorite dessert was on the kitchen counter when you arrived. Her family will forever miss her canned beets, pickles, pickle relish and chokecherry jelly.

Embroidery, crocheting and quilting were hobbies, along with cake decorating and painting. Dorothy was an accomplished seamstress and sewed everything from suits for Larry to Easter outfits and pajamas for her kids and mother-of-the-bride dresses for friends. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren treasure the quilts she made for them.

Dorothy’s happy place was her garden. Along with planting vegetable and flowers, she planted every tree in her yard. She loved a good garage sale and delighted in finding hidden treasures. Her annual visit to Storybook Land with the grandkids was a cherished tradition. A trip to Rome, Italy, was a memorable experience where she saw the Pope and discovered a love for gelato.

Dorothy worked at Mobile Oil Company in Minneapolis after graduating from college until she married. As her children grew, she started working at The First National Bank in Eden where she played a key role in integrating computers. She then moved on to NESDCAP, Grow South Dakota where she applied her accounting skills. In later years, she found fulfillment working with youth as a substitute teacher and aid at Tiospa Zina Tribal School. Before her diagnosis with Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS), she worked part-time at the Britton Assisted Living Center, providing housekeeping and friendship to the residents there.

She was a long-time member of the Eden Lions Club and served as the club’s president for a decade. Dorothy was inspired by their mission to provide eyeglasses to people in need along with community service initiatives. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir, served in the Altar Society, and taught CCD. She was also active in Relay for Life.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Hilary, and five children, including Tamra (Randy) Holbeck, Fort Worth, TX; Roxanne (Dave) Lucchesi, Brookings, SD; Kim Miller, Epiphany, SD; Terry (Cheryl) Neuberger, Eden; and Eric Neuberger, Eden. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, including Nicholas (Samantha) Holbeck and daughter Parker, Fort Worth; Kristen Holbeck, Fort Worth; Lydia Lucchesi, Austin, TX; Emma (Carson Webb) Lucchesi, St. Paul, MN; Marshall Miller, St. Peter, MN; Tanner (Kelsey) Miller, Epiphany; Kelsey (Logan) Schaunaman and children Maisyn and Madden, Fargo, ND; and Matthew (Tierra) Neuberger and children Farrahn, Ridge and Kase, Eden. Surviving siblings include Eleanor Harles, Margaret Smaldone, Darlene Halseth and Dennis Hamling.

She was preceded in death by son-in-law Derrin Miller, grandson Austin Miller, her parents, and siblings Delores Harles, Mariann Whempner, Raymond Hamling, Tony Hamling, and Henry Hamling Jr.
