Donna Darrington (Shawgo) was born February 11, 1947, to Don and Dorothy (Gross) Shawgo, spending her childhood in Gettysburg and Faulkton, SD. Donna Graduated from Faulkton High School in 1965. and graduated from Northern State University in 1969, with a degree in Education. On August 1, 1971, she married Dennis Darrington, they were blessed with three daughters and nine grandchildren. She was a middle and high school English teacher in Centerville, SD prior to managing Country King; the restaurant her and Dennis owned for 19 years in Pierre SD. After they sold Country King, Donna renewed her teaching certificate and began to teach again - that was what she really enjoyed. She was more than a teacher, but also a mentor for her students and truly cared about each and every one of them. After being diagnosed with Alzheimers she retired from teaching and fought hard to keep her mind as crisp as possible for as long as possible. She was a fighter and very rarely complained about anything. Donna enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, and going on walks. Her kindness and “heart of gold” personality was inspiring to all who had the opportunity to know her. That and her love of Snickers candy bars. Donna is survived by her three daughters and nine grandchildren; Danae and husband Collin Gregerson and their four boys Cole, Wyatt, Cooper and Chase; Darah and husband Tyler Melroe and children Jacey and Jaxen; Dalyn and her husband Chris Rhoades and children Drew, Kate, and Maverick, and like-daughter Cindy (Lynn) Rall. She was preceded in death by her parents Dorothy and Don Shawgo, brother Terry Shawgo and her spouse Dennis Darrington.
A lunch will be served following the service at Brady-Monsen American Legion Post #129 in Waubay, SD.
Condolences may be sent to Dalyn Rhoades at 11115 S. 175th St., Omaha NE 68136
