Dan was born on April 24, 1952, to Doris (Stromseth) and Carl J. Block at Peabody Hospital in Webster, South Dakota. As a child, he grew up on his parent’s “Block” family farm east of Grenville, South Dakota along with his nine siblings.

Dan was educated at District #117 for grades First through Fifth. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School for grades sixth through eight. Dan received Baptism, Communion, Confirmation at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. It was well known by the St. Joseph’s priest that if “in a pinch” he would be able to rely on the “Block Boys” Dan and Ken, to be altar servers at mass. In 1970, he graduated from Webster High School. Following graduation, Dan enlisted in the US Marine Corps, and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Each week, Dan would write a letter to one of his brothers or sisters who were back home. Each of the brothers and sisters would in turn write back to him. Dan’s kindness prevailed in his desire to let each of them know he valued them as well as encouraging their reading and writing skills. While in the US Marine Corps, Dan received a “Sharpshooter” Award. Dan lived the US Marine Corps motto “SEMPER FIDELIS” Latin for “Always Faithful” throughout his life. In 1972, Dan received an honorable discharge from the US. Marine Corps.

Dan worked for 30 years at Northern State University’s Food and Nutrition Department in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

In 1994, Dan and Kathy Hengen joyously welcomed their daughter Kendra into their family.

Dan will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew him. Those whom he leaves behind to cherish his memory are as follows: parents, Carl J. Block and Doris (Stromseth) Block of Webster, daughter, Kendra and fiancé Matt Murray, siblings and in-laws, Kenneth Block (Terri) of Vonore, Tennessee; Audrey Block of Aberdeen, South Dakota; Ronald Block(Nancy) of Webster, South Dakota; Joyce Block Gix (Bob Gix) of Cashmere, Washington; Sandra Block-Hansen (Lester Hansen) of Veblen, South Dakota; Keith Block of Wilmot, South Dakota; Douglas Block (Elaine) of Waubay, South Dakota; Charles Block (Linda) of Long Beach, California.
