Carroll Peterson, 88 of Webster died on Saturday, September 06, 2014 at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls.
His funeral will be at 1:30 P.M. Friday, September 12, 2014 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Webster, Rev. Daniel Ostercamp and Rev. John Hisel will officiate. Burial will be in Webster Cemetery.
Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Thursday 5-7 P.M. closing with a prayer service provided by Rev. Justin Iverson.
Carroll was born on January 4, 1926, in Lilly, SD, to Edward & Carolyn (Froslie) Peterson. He was baptized at Lilly Lutheran Church and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Webster. He was united in marriage to Arleen L. Schaefer in October, 1947, with the union lasting 33 years until her passing in 1980.
Carroll was drafted into the Army during high school and entered the service on August 28, 1944. He served in the European Theatre of Operations from January 1945 to June 1946. He joined the 80th Division in Eastern Europe as a machine gunner and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He then transferred to the 1st Infantry Division and the 102nd Infantry Division, which were involved in the liberation of Buchenwald and Ebensee Concentration Camps. His military infantry service took him to Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Germany, and Austria. Carroll ended his military career as a T4 (E-5) Sgt, and he received two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. After WWII Carroll attended Northern State University for one year and also graduated from high school the same year. He was employed with the South Dakota Department of Transportation from 1947-1987 in Webster and Aberdeen retiring as a project engineer. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and the DAV. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, and hunting with his faithful dog, Queenie.
Carroll passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 2 days.
Carroll is survived by four children, Michael (Mary) of Osceola, IA, Douglas (Louise) of Sioux Falls, SD, Gail Olson-Duck (Jack) Hartford, SD, and Jerald, Tampa Fl.; a very special friend, Margaret McKittrick, Webster, SD; a sister, Evelyn Schultz, Milwaukee, WI; and 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Arleen, his parents, and a sister, Veryl Strand.
