Byron Merle Bain was born September 9, 1947, to Glen and T. Arlene (Grandy) Bain in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The family made their home in the Frederick area where he attended school, worked on the family hobby farm raising rabbits and worked on his grandpa’s carpentry crew. He graduated from Frederick High School in 1965 and attended North Dakota State School of Science for a short time to study auto body repair.

On September 21, 1968, Byron married Nancy Johnson at Roslyn Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Webster, where they raised their three children, Tammy, Tracy and Travis.

After working various jobs, Byron chose to follow his passion by starting his own carpentry business called “Odd Jobs”. He spent many days shingling roofs, painting houses, working on vehicles and remodeling/repairing homes and businesses in the area. He truly was a jack of all trades.

The most important thing in Byron’s life was his family. He supported his children in all of their endeavors by attending their many activities, coaching both basketball and baseball and serving as an assistant scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts. Much of his time with his children was spent “on the job,” where he taught them about work ethic and many other important life lessons.

Byron enjoyed many hobbies such as playing pinochle, cribbage and horseshoes with family and friends. He also enjoyed pheasant hunting and watching westerns. He loved to spend time with his many faithful pets and he was an avid bird watcher.

Despite Byron’s occasional gruff exterior, he had a kind heart, strong mind and would help anyone in need. He will be greatly missed.

Byron passed away at Webster, South Dakota, at the age of 77 years, 6 months and 22 days.

He will be forever loved by his wife Nancy of Webster, children, Tammy (Mike) Day of Sioux Falls, SD, Tracy (Andy) Dolney of Medford, MN, and Travis (Shala) Bain of Byron, MN, eight grandchildren, Michael (Gisselle), Dylan, Mara, Kaden, Brody, Taryn, Anders, Callan, and one great grandchild, Greyson. He is also survived by his siblings, Nancy (Bob Bray) Swanson of Aberdeen, SD, Colleen (Danne) Schlomer of Glenham, SD and Owen (Jacki) Bain of Huron, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and T. Arlene, and his in-laws, Herbert and Vernice Johnson.
