Jo was born on May 11, 1929 at Crocker, SD to Gus and Marie (Ronning) Bye – the last of nine children. She grew up on the family farm southwest of Lily, SD. As a high school freshman Jo moved to Chicago to study while living with her sister Esther. She returned to South Dakota and graduated from Webster High School in 1948. Following graduation, she attended Northern Normal in Aberdeen and received a teaching certificate after a few weeks of training. She taught for a year at a little one-room country school near their farm.
She married Lawrence Lutz at Lily Lutheran Church in Lily on August 26, 1951. They moved to the family farm southeast of Webster and four children were born to this union. Lawrence passed away in 1990 and Jo remained single the remainder of her life.
Besides working alongside her husband on the farm, Jo spent a number of years clerking at several local businesses: Nergers, Koeneckes, Evie’s Superette, Alco, Cornwell Drug and Webster Tire. She enjoyed providing great customer service and interacting with the public.
She served as caregiver for many of her family, including her mother-in-law, Frances; father; husband; brother, Paul; and in-laws, August, and Emma Lutz. She enjoyed watching over many of her grandchildren as well. Most recently she helped care for her children, Marcia, and Loren, as they faced their physical problems. Caregiving was her hallmark.
Eventually Jo moved into Webster across from the United Methodist Church where she was a member and past president of the UMW. She volunteered her time to do whatever she was able for as long as she could. She had a special group of friends that would meet at Pizza Hut after Sunday worship for lunch. She also had a Monday night “Dancing with The Stars” group she entertained.
Last fall her health declined and Monty and Mary Bloom cared for her until she moved to Sun Dial Manor last week.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Lawrence; son, Loren; daughter, Marcia Gisselbeck; parents; and siblings Paul, Helen, Richard, Ed, Esther, Norman, Geneva and an infant who passed at birth.
Left to celebrate our Norwegian Queen, are a son, Lynn (Vonnie) Lutz, Webster; daughter, Mary Jo (Monty) Bloom, Webster; daughter-in-law, Patty Lutz, and son-in-law, Dan Gisselbeck, both of Webster. In addition, she will be greatly missed by nine grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; step-sister-in-law, Joyce Proctor and many nieces and nephews.
