Barbara Swift, 73 of Webster died on Monday, January 10, 2011 at Strand-Kjorsvig Community Rest Home in Roslyn. Her funeral will be at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, January 13, 2011 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Webster, Rev. Kristin Ostercamp will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at Vangen Lutheran Cemetery, Mission Hill, SD. Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Wednesday 5-7 P.M. and prior to services on Thursday. Fiksdalfuneral.com. Barbara Gale Buckman was born on Sunday, October 10, 1937 to Ralph and Myrtle (White) Buckman at Nampa, Idaho. She grew up in the area and graduated from high school in 1955. She attended U.S.D. in Vermillion, South Dakota and taught school in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. On June 13, 1960 she was united in marriage to Douglas Swift at Gayville, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple made their home in Spearfish where she was a homemaker. A son, John Samuel was born in September 1961. In 1964 they moved to Glendale, California where she was a researcher and librarian in Santa Barbara. In 1966 they adopted a girl, Kathryn Marie. In 1967 they moved to Indian River, Michigan. She worked at Sears and was a den mother for her sons Boy Scout den. In 1974 they moved to Webster where she was a librarian for the Webster Public School system for twenty five years, retiring in 1999. She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church where she served on the Church Council, was active in W.E.L.C.A. and a supporter of Lutherans Outdoors. She also was active in the Red Hat Society. She was an avid reader, stamp collector and traveled extensively. Barbara passed away on Monday, January 10, 2011 at Roslyn, South Dakota at the age of 73 years and 3 months. Survivors include one son, John Swift of Kissimmee, FL; one daughter, Kathryn (Chad) Dobney of Decorah, IA; a foster daughter, Kim (Aaron) Dekkers of Hawarden, IA; two brothers, Robert (Nancy) Buckman of Sneads Ferry, NC and William Buckman of Port Austin, MI; and nine grandchildren, Kelly, Athena, Trevor, Patrick, Kasia, Kaitlin, MiKayla, Brianna and Brayden. She was preceded in death by her parents.
