Arvis Darlene Pies was born on October 3, 1927 to Phillip and Leona (Donat) Pies at Ortley, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. She attended country school north of Ortley through the eighth grade. At around the age of ten, she began working for various families in the area with housework helping with young children as well as cooking and baking.
Arvis then ventured to Watertown, South Dakota and enrolled in beauty school. Upon completion, she began working in a beauty shop in Arlington, South Dakota. One night at a dance, she met the love of her life, Roy Flones. The couple was married on July 13, 1946 at Watertown. To this union one daughter, Julaine was born. The family made their home on a farm south of Ortley, with the exception of one year when the couple ran a café in Sisseton, South Dakota. Arvis was a homemaker at heart but also worked out at a couple local businesses including Knapp’s Café and Wist Produce in Webster. In 1990, the couple moved their house into Waubay. Roy passed away in 2004. Arvis continued to live in Waubay until 2015, when she moved to Stoneybrook in Watertown and then to Clark Care and Rehab in January of this year.
Arvis was a hard worker but also knew how to have a good time! She enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning, playing pinochle and whist, being teased by Roy in earlier years, visiting over a cup of coffee, but above all else she loved time spent with her family. Her only grandchild Chris was the apple of her eye and her three great-granddaughters were her pride and joy! She was so proud of each one of them.
Arvis passed away at Clark, South Dakota on Tuesday September 12, 2017 at the age of 89 years, 11 months, and 9 days.
She will be forever loved and greatly missed by her daughter Julaine (Willy) Selzler of Watertown, SD, one grandson Chris (Amy) Sass and their three girls; Olivia, Ella, and Alayna of Bradley, SD, one brother Lloyd (Dorothy) Pies of Sisseton, SD, two sisters, Arlyne Schulz of Waubay, SD, and Karen Henderson of Milbank, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, and two sisters.
