WEBSTER- Alice Schmidt, 78 of Webster died on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Manorcare Healthcare in Aberdeen. Her funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Monday, June 8, 2009 at American Lutheran Church in Webster, Rev. Jan FitzGibbon officiating. Burial will be in the Webster Cemetery. Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service (fiksdalfuneral.com) in Webster on Sunday 5-7 P.M. and prior to services on Monday. Alice Marion Solberg was born on Monday, February 9, 1931 to Melvin and Anna (Iverson) Solberg on the family farm near Crocker, South Dakota. She graduated from Bristol High School and then attended Northern State Teacher’s College in Aberdeen and earned her teaching certificate. She then taught country school in the area for two years. On March 31, 1950 she was united in marriage to Harry Schmidt at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bristol, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple made their home on the Schmidt family farm in Racine Township, Day County east of Webster. She was a homemaker and raised their five children. In 1976 they sold the farm and moved to a house just west of Webster city limits. She did housework and also cared for several elderly and handicapped people. When she retired in 1989 she had worked for over fifty people. She also cared for their son, Kevin who at the age of five was diagnosed with Muscular Distrophy. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Webster where she was active in W.E.L.C.A. and making quilts for World Relief. The couple were also custodians of the church for over fourteen years. She liked to travel, go camping, following the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, going to stock car races and watching Nascar, doing puzzles and was an avid Webster Bearcat fan. She enjoyed visiting with family, friends and having the grandchildren stop by. Alice passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Aberdeen, South Dakota at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 23 days. Survivors include her husband, Harry of 59 years; one son, Allen (Judy) Schmidt of Watertown, SD; three daughters, Kathleen (Doug) Grupe of Webster, SD, Liana (Ron) Foltz of Watertown, SD and Rhonda (Paul) Sigaty of Aberdeen, SD; one brother, Marlin (Betty) Solberg of Sioux Falls, SD; two sisters, Arlene (Norman) Shumaker of Sioux Falls, SD and Deloris (Daryl) Valsvig of Webster, SD; seven grandchildren, three step grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. She was precededed in death by her parents, one son, Kevin (2002) and one sister.
